font-size: 14pt;\">When I was a kid growing up in the north end of Boise, Idaho (called The City of Trees) in South-Western Idaho along the banks of the Boise River, kid\u2019s places of preference in which to play and entertain themselves were tree houses built up in the major forks of a big elm, cottonwood, willow, or sycamore tree.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That was as good as it got for young children.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Their self proclaimed \u201cclub house\u201d was more or less a true hideaway place into which they could disappear and not be seen or interrupted by anyone.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was their personal turf, so to speak, and the builders who occupied these quarters made and set all the rules of living and conduct by the members of the \u201cclub,\u201d or whoever else was formally invited to enter this secret place.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">This tree house was indeed a special spot where the kids could meet in solemn assembly or just laugh, play games, tell stories&#8211; real or imagined, and\/or just fool around.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As the kids (members of the special club) thought long and hard about their chosen rules of conduct, they came up with three rather perceptive ones:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><b><\/b><b>1. \u00a0 \u00a0 Nobody act big.<\/b><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><b><\/b><b>2. \u00a0 \u00a0 Nobody act small.<\/b><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><b><\/b><b>3. \u00a0 \u00a0 Everybody act medium.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Not bad theology!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In different words, God Almighty says, in essence, the very same things:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8230;\u201clove one another with brotherly affection.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Out do one another in showing honor.\u201d (Romans 12:10<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8230;\u201cFor you were called to freedom, brothers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>another.\u201d(Galatians 5:13<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0(1) \u00a0 &#8230; \u201cYet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">great among you, let him be your servant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0(2) And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>(Matthew 20: 26&#8211;27<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>NKJV).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8230;\u201cLet another man praise you, and not your own mouth;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>A stranger and not your own lips.\u201d (Proverbs 27 : 2<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>NKJV).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Just \u201cact medium.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b> Believable, honest, human, thoughtful, and down-to-earth.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Regardless of your elevated position or high pile of honors or row of degrees or endless list of achievements,&#8230;<b>just stay real.<\/b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><b>Work hard at counteracting the \u201ccelebrity syndrome.\u201d <\/b>Junk any idea that you deserve some<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>kind of a pat on the back or engraved wrist watch for a job well done.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Who did you do it for, anyway?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If you did it for God, He has an infinite number of unseen ways to reward you.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If you did it for man, no wonder you are clawing for glory!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But it\u2019s so subtle.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>So easy to draw out that praise for yourself, isn\u2019t it?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Especially around the house whenever you do a few extra \u201cHoney-dos\u201d or earn some real \u201cbrownie points\u201d with your spouse or children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">There used to be a certain business firm in America that made headlines out of deflating some people\u2019s overblown egos.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Its well-trained employees accepted contracts to squash fluffy cream filled pies into the faces of various pompous individuals. In its first few months of operations, over 60 hits were made at $35 a pop.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>All on disbelieving, immaculately dressed, prim-and-proper victims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Imagine this scene: A dignified, well-tailored executive vice president waits for the elevator doors to open on the seventeenth floor of a high rise office building.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As he steps out of the carriage box, a stranger whips a cream pie out of a cardboard box and sploosh!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Giving the pie a professional twist, the hit-man jumps into the elevator headed for the main floor.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There stands Vice-President Schmutz&#8230;his once spotless suit, matching vest, and beautiful silk tie now dripping with chocolate cream pie goo and crust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">An employee of the pie tossing company said, \u201cA pie in the face brings a man\u2019s dignity down to where it should be and puts the big guys on the same level with everyone else.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Even the renown Christian Biola College in southern California weathered the pie-throwing rage.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>No one was safe from the chocolate cream gang&#8211;neither the professors nor even the school\u2019s great-hearted president who took it on the chin like a champ.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019d hate to think how many college presidents would have responded with their super-guarded, highly polished egos smeared with bright gold pumpkin pie and whipping cream.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In about two and one half seconds, the whole school would know the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I wonder how many professors would \u201cact medium.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Again, what was it the son of David said?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cLet another praise you&#8230;a stranger, and not your own lips.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Meaning what?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Meaning no self-reference to some enviable accomplishment.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Meaning no desire to manipulate and manufacture praise.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Meaning authentic surprise when applauded.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Genuine, rare humility&#8211;regardless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Like the inimitable Principal Cairns, headmaster of an English school, who was walking onto the platform in a line of dignitaries.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As he stepped up, a burst of spontaneous applause arose from the audience as an expression of their appreciation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In characteristic modesty, Cairns stepped back to let the man behind him pass by as he began to applaud his colleague.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He genuinely assumed the applause was for another.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">One final warning.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Don\u2019t try to fake it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>False humility smells worse than raw conceit.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The answer lies not in trying to appear worthless and wormy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Folks in your own family won\u2019t fall for that.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Rather, be most sensitive to the achievements, skills, and contributions of others.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And say so.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s one way to serve others in love.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Like Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Do you have the rules memorized?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They\u2019re really not that difficult.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cNobody act big.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Nobody act small.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Everybody act medium.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019d call it very wise counsel from a tree clubhouse whose membership is pretty good at practicing what it stands for and preaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Permit me to point out that these humble and sincere people also laugh out loud whenever a selected person gets a cream pie in the kisser!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Many can testify this is true.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Please allow me to suggest that you begin to practice these same rules of conduct within your own household.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Nothing can beat the complete trusting of one another and the love and respect that such trust surely generates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;
