D. English King Edward II issued a royal edict banning the game of soccer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The sport bore little resemblance to the game that is played today.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It often pitted town against town, with hundreds of players on each side of two teams,&#8230;. brawling across fields or down roads.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was very popular, but nevertheless the king threatened players with harsh prison terms if caught playing it in violation of his edict.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Other British kings followed suit.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Edward III, Richard II, and Henry IV each issued their own bans of the game.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In 1457 A.D., King James II of Scotland banned soccer and golf.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In 1491 A. D. Scottish King James IV issued this decree:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cIt is statute and ordained that in no, place of the Realme there be used<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Fute-ball, golf, or uther unprofitable sports.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">So what was it about soccer and golf and \u201cuther\u201d sports that was so upsetting?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The kings considered them \u201cunprofitable\u201d because they were distracting men from archery practice, which was essential to the defense of their countries.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Without a populace of trained archers, they couldn\u2019t raise effective armies in times of crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">But kings\u2019 edicts ultimately proved no match for men\u2019s passion for sport.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The laws were ignored and eventually forgotten.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Soccer and golf continued to thrive, despite the kings who considered them to be a royal pain&#8230;in the neck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><b>\u201cWe command and forbid on behalf of the King, on pain of imprisonment, such game to be used.\u201d<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>King Edward II<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/b>Banning soccer in 1314<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Not all royalty was down on golf.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Mary Queen of Scots was an avid golfer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>She paid the price for it in 1563 A.D., when she was castigated for taking to the links shortly after the murder of her husband (in which she may have had a hand).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Learn More, Know More, and Become More&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A bevy of kings who had a real problem with sports Way back in the year 1314 A.
