They huddled inside the storm door–two little children in ragged outgrown coats.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAny old papers, lady?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

I was busy.\u00a0 <\/span>I wanted to say no, and be rid of the pair–until I looked down at their feet.\u00a0 <\/span>Thin little sandals, sopped with sleet.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cCome on in and I will make you a cup of hot cocoa.\u201d I chimed.\u00a0 <\/span>There was no conversation.\u00a0 <\/span>Their soggy sandals left muddy wet marks upon the hearthstone.<\/span><\/p>\n

I served them hot cocoa and toast with jam to help fortify their little bodies against the chill outside.\u00a0 <\/span>Then I went back to the kitchen and again attempted to figure out how I could make my much too little household budget somehow balance out….<\/span><\/p>\n

The silence in the front room struck through to me.\u00a0 <\/span>I rose from my chair and looked in.<\/span><\/p>\n

The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it.\u00a0 <\/span>The boy asked in a flat and weak voice, \u201cLady…are you rich?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAm I rich?\u00a0 <\/span>Mercy no!\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>I looked up at my shabby slip covers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The girl put her cup back in its saucer–carefully.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cYour cups match your saucers,\u201d she quietly replied.\u00a0 <\/span>Her voice was old, with a hunger that was not of the stomach.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The pair left then, clinging to their bundles of old papers as they walked away into the stiff icy wind.\u00a0 <\/span>They hadn\u2019t said thank you.\u00a0 <\/span>They didn\u2019t need to.\u00a0 <\/span>They had done more than that for me.\u00a0 <\/span>Plain blue pottery cups and saucers.\u00a0 <\/span>But they matched.\u00a0 <\/span>I tested the potatoes and stirred the gravy.\u00a0 <\/span>Potatoes and brown gravy, a roof over our heads, my man with a good steady job–these things matched too.<\/span><\/p>\n

I moved the chairs back from the fire and tidied the living room.\u00a0 <\/span>The muddy prints of small sandals were still wet upon my hearth.\u00a0 <\/span>I let them be.\u00a0 <\/span>I want them there in case I ever forget again how very rich I really am.<\/span><\/p>\n
