font-size: 14pt;\"><b>A BIBLE FOR EVERYONE<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><b>God Used Him to Bring The English Bible to England<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Miles Coverdale was only four years old when Christopher Columbus discovered the New World in 1492.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Born in York, England, he graduated from Cambridge, was ordained into the priesthood in 1514, and soon became an Augustinian friar.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He belonged to a group of Cambridge scholars including William Tyndale, Thomas Cranmer, Hugh Latimer, and his prior, Robert Barnes, who met at the White Horse Tavern to discuss religious reform.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A friend described what Coverdale was like in those days:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Under the mastership of Robert Barnes he drank in good learning with a<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>burning thirst.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He was a young man of friendly and upright nature and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>very gentle spirit, and when the Church of England revived, he was one<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>of the first to make a pure profession of Christ.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Other men gave<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>themselves in part, he gave himself wholly to propagating the truth of<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Jesus Christ\u2019s gospel and manifesting his glory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In 1528 after preaching against the mass, confession, and images, Coverdale was forced to leave the Augustinians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">During his time abroad from 1528 to 1535 he worked with Tyndale in Hamburg and Antwerp on translations of the Old Testament.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In October 1535 he published the first edition of his own Bible, in Marburg, Germany.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">To prepare this first complete printed English Bible, Coverdale relied on the work of five translations, among them Tyndale\u2019s.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The long dedication he wrote to Henry VIII and Queen Anne implies his expectation that the king would receive it favorably.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>With customary humility, Coverdale wrote,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Considering now, most gracious prince, the inestimable treasure, fruit<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>and prosperity everlasting that God giveth with his word, and trusting in<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>his infinite goodness that he would bring my simple and rude labour<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>herein to good effect, therefore, as the Holy Ghost moved men to do the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>cost hereof, so was I boldened in God to labour in the same&#8230;.I do with<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>all humbleness submit mine understanding and my poor translation unto<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>the spirit of truth in your grace, so make I this protestation, having God<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>to record in my conscience, that I have neither wrested not altered so<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>much as one word for the maintenance of any manner of sect, but have<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>with a clear conscience purely and faithfully translated this out of five<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>sundry interpreters, having only the manifest truth of the scripture<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>before mine eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Today\u2019s bibles still retain some of his phrases, as well as the idea of chapter headings and of not including the Apocrypha with the other Old Testament books.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Coverdale Bible was so well received that the king\u2019s chancellor,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Thomas Cromwell, asked Coverdale to go to Paris to supervise the publication of an official Bible to be placed in every parish church in England.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Begun in Paris, this second Bible known as the Great Bible had to be finished in London when the inquisitor general of France forbade any further printing of the English Bible.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Great Bible was presented to Henry VIII by Thomas Cromwell in 1539.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It proved to be Coverdale\u2019s greatest achievement and had a significant influence on the translation of the King James Version in 1611.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Miles Coverdale died on <b>January 20, 1569, <\/b>having provided the English with Bibles in their own language.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Points of Reflection:<\/b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Because God has revealed himself in the Bible in words, it is of utmost importance to be able to read those words in one\u2019s own language in an accurate translation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But the work of scholars such as Miles Coverdale accomplishes little unless we actually read and study the Bible to know what God is saying to us.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is the very reason that God continually tells readers and students to study and mediate on the written word day and night.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(See Joshua 1 : 8)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><b>\u201cFor assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass<\/b> <b>from the law till all is fulfilled.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;
