Do What You Really Like To Do
That Assists And Benefits Other People

Far too many people waste their entire lives working and doing other things that they do not like to do or want to do,…or that really serves no one else but themselves. Such a scenario is a terribly sad and sorrowful way to live your life. It is completely selfish which is why there is little or no recognizable rewards or benefits to show for all the time, energy, and resources that the one doing it pours into the work efforts. Ask any truly successful person what you should always guard against doing in your own journey to success and they will respond…“Don’t waste time and resources doing unimportant or insignificant things that benefit no one but yourself.”

Let’s take a closer look at what I am saying. Many years ago, a very successful businessman and author told the world about how he came to reach his highly desired level of success while doing that which he truly loved to do. “Build on your strengths, not on your weaknesses,” he boldly proclaimed.

You are only going to get better using your strengths, and the better you get at using those strengths, the more people you will able to serve and assist. The more people you serve and assist, the greater will be your own income. Income is important in your life because it is allows you to build an enjoyable life and live at a higher level than the level on which you would live with only a meager income.

You need money in your possession in order to give you the ability to live and enjoy a lifestyle in America. Money is a unit of measure of the amount of service you render to another human being or group of people. If you desire more money in your life, then you must first increase the amount of service you put forth for the benefit of other people.

Come with me as we relive the events and decisions that changed the entire world for a young American, Mr. Dale Carnegie. Maybe you know of someone who is facing the same situations as was Mr. Carnegie. We can all learn a lot from those who have gone before us. Always remember, Success Principles Never Change. They work the same for everyone no matter who they are, where they live, and what they do to earn or create a living.

Dale Carnegie stated:

“Many years ago, I was one of the most unhappy lads in all of New York City. I was employed as a salesman selling motor trucks for a living. I didn’t know what made a motor truck run,…and…I didn’t want to know what made it to run. I despised my job. But I also despised living in a cheap unfurnished one room apartment that was infested with cockroaches. Additionally I despised having to eat in cheap, dirty restaurants that were also probably infested with cockroaches.

My life was filled with disappointment, worry, bitterness, and rebellion. My rebellion was nourished by the mental pain created from finally admitting that my youthful dreams had somehow turned into nightmares. Was this really what life was to be all about for me? Was this situation in which I was operating…to be the great adventure I initially thought that it was going to be? Was this all that life would ever mean to me–working at a job I despised, living with cockroaches, eating vile food–and with no hope for the future?…I longed for leisure time to read, and to write the books I had dreamed of writing one day,….back when I was in college.

I knew I had everything to gain and nothing to lose by giving up the job I despised. I wasn’t interested in making a lot of money, but I was interested in making a lot of life. I realized that I had come to that special point that everyone reaches in their lives, to that moment of decision when they are starting out in life. This vital question is simply… “What are you really going to do with the use of your life?”

Making the right decision at this point will completely alter your entire future. It will make the remainder of your life happy and prosperous,…or….unhappy and miserable. Choose wisely.

Mr. Carnegie continued:

“My decision was this: I would give up the work I loathed, and begin to use the skills I had studied and learned while I was in college. I had studied to become a teacher. Consequently I decided to begin making my living by teaching adult classes in night schools. Then I would still have my days free to read books, prepare lectures, and write novels and short stories. I just wanted ‘to live to write and write to live.’

I thoroughly thought things out in full detail and consequence. I realized that my training and experience in public speaking had been of more practical value to me in business–and in life– than had everything else I had studied in college. I asked myself,…Why did public speaking have such a high value in my life? Because it had wiped out my timidity and lack of self confidence and given me the courage and assurance to deal with people. It had also made clear to me that leadership usually gravitates to the man who can get up and say what he thinks to another group of people without concern, worry, or intimidation.

My first two attempts to establish night classes failed and I was rejected. I was disappointed then, but now I thank God that they did turn me down, because that gave me a much better opportunity to start teaching in the YMCA night schools where I had to show concrete results quickly. All of my students were volunteers,…These adults did not come to my classes because they wanted college credits or social prestige. They came for one reason only: they wanted to solve their problems. They wanted to stand up on their own feet and say a few meaningful words at a business meeting without fainting from fright. Salesmen wanted to be able to call on a tough customer without having to walk around the block three times to get up the courage to do so. They wanted to develop poise and self confidence. They wanted to get ahead in business. They wanted to have more money for their families. And since they were paying their tuition on an installment basis–and they stopped paying if they didn’t get results– and since I was being paid, not a salary, but a percentage of the profits, I had to be practical if I wanted to eat.

I felt at the time that I was teaching under a handicap, but I realize now that I was getting priceless training. I had to motivate my students. I had to help them solve their problems. I had to make each session so inspiring that these students wanted to continue coming back for more and more teaching and learning.

I started with nothing more than what I possessed at the time, and used my training and talents as best I was able.

It was exciting work and I loved it. I was astounded at how quickly my businessmen students developed self-confidence and how quickly many of them secured promotions and increased pay. My classes and my income levels were succeeding well beyond any of my wildest expectations and most optimistic hopes. I was in business for myself! It started with small and meager beginnings, but was growing by leaps and bounds. Within three years my earnings had risen over 600%! At first I taught only public speaking, but as time went by I discerned that these students also needed the ability to win friends and influence other people. Since I could not find an adequate textbook on the subject of human relations, I wrote one myself. This textbook grew and evolved out of the experiences of the adults in these classes. I titled the book “How To Win Friends and Influence People.” At the time I never dreamed this book would become so popular and well received by people all over the world.”

You see, friends, once a human need has been recognized and identified, all it takes for great success to occur is for some one person or group of people to present a practical way to fill this need. That is precisely the manner and way that God Almighty designed things to work here on earth.

Learn to trust your own heart and it’s leadings and then be willing to follow what your heart is telling you to do. Use your personal strengths and do those things that you desire and love to do. Don’t waste your life doing something that you loathe. Do those things that you love to do and you will be much happier while you live and work on the earth.
